How to disable a 5G network

Many routers auto-merge 2.4 GHz + 5 GHz under the same SSID (“Smart Connect”) which makes devices pick whichever band seems best; that can confuse devices that only support 2.4. Some routers don’t allow you to disable 5 GHz (or split bands) due to firmware limitations. To disable your 5G band, follow the steps below.

  1. Log in to your router’s admin interface

    • Usually via http://192.168.1.1 or a model-specific address (check the back sticker or user manual).

    • Use admin username/password.

  2. Find Wireless / Wi-Fi settings

    • Look under “Wireless”, “Advanced Wireless”, “Radio Settings”, or “Dual Band settings”.

  3. Disable the 5 GHz radio / band

    • Some routers have a toggle “Enable 5 GHz." Uncheck that if that's the case.

    • Others let you split the bands (disable “Smart Connect”) and then disable 5 GHz separately. On Asus for example, you can choose band options in "Wireless Settings." On a Ubiquiti you can edit your SSID and under “Advanced Options” select the band (2.4 GHz only) instead of both.

    • If it's unclear, a quick google search of how to disable your 5G for your specific model should be straightforward.

  4. Save/apply

    • The router might reboot or temporarily drop connection.

    • Afterward, only 2.4 GHz will be broadcast.

  5. Test your device setup

    • On your phone/tablet, “forget” any Wi-Fi networks and reconnect to the 2.4 GHz network only.

    • Retry the Toybox Wi-Fi.

If your router doesn't allow to disable the 5 GHz network, here are some alternative methods.

  • If you haven't already, name the 2.4 GHz network differently (e.g. homewifi2.4G) and use that name for setup so devices don’t try 5 GHz.

  • Lower the radio strength of the 5 GHz

  • Use a 2.4 GHz only access point/extender. Connect an extra AP (or an old router as AP if you happen to have an extra one hand) that only broadcasts 2.4 GHz and use it temporarily for setup.

  • Use a mobile hotspot (2.4 GHz only) to connect the Toybox

  • Move the Toybox away from the router so that your device connects to 2.4 GHz by default (5 GHz has shorter range).
